Valley conservationists recognized for efforts

SAN LUIS VALLEY—The Rio Grande Watershed Association of Conservation Districts believes it is important to preserve natural resources for our future needs. This comes from understanding and then carefully and thoughtfully managing for future generations.

This is the criteria that the Rio Grande Watershed Association of Conservation Districts begins with when looking at who will be their Conservationist’s of the Year. Each of the five districts in the San Luis Valley( Center, Conejos, Costilla, Mosca-Hooper and Rio Grande), chose a Conservationists of the Year from within each district, the operations can either be a farm or a ranch, or a small acreage land owner who has done some exceptional work in conserving their acreage. The nomination is based on the on the ground conservation that is being implemented by the operation, there goals for the resource and their level of public outreach. This year there were three outstanding conservationists from the Rio Grande Basin

The Rio Grande Watershed Association of Conservation Districts is pleased to announce, from the Costilla Conservation District, the farming Conservationist of the Year is Espinosa Farms , Ft. Garland Colorado. from the Conejos Conservation District, The Rancher of the Year is Los Hermanos Luceros, Antonito, Colorado; and from the Center Conservation District, The Small Acreage Landowner of the Compost Technologies, Center, Colorado.
