DENVER—John Gregory “Greg” Singer, 66, of College Station, Texas passed away on Aug. 26, 2013 surrounded by family in Denver, Colorado.
Greg was born in Fairfield, Iowa on Oct. 11, 1946 to Stanley Ward Singer and Marion Irene (Bray) Singer. Greg began working at Brown’s Shoe Fit Company in high school where he continued to work after graduation. He became the youngest owner/manager in the company’s history when he took over the Spencer, Iowa store at age 21. After managing the Spencer store for 10 years, he opened the College Station store where he remained until his retirement in 2002.
Greg loved life—traveling and serving others were two of his passions. Going on cruises was a favorite pastime, but he most enjoyed spending his summers in Creede with his many friends and family. When he wasn’t traveling, he dedicated his time to serving others through volunteer and charity work. Due to his commitment to Donor Alliance, Greg will live on through organ and tissue donation. It is estimated that as many as 100 people will be recipients of Greg’s final act of service.
Greg is survived by his wife of 44 years Diane Young Singer, mother Marion Singer of Washington, Iowa; daughter Lori (Keith) Norton of Dallas, Texas; son James “Jay” Singer of College Station, Texas; granddaughters Kayla and Karly Norton, sister Kathryn (Jerry) Bensing of Franktown, Colo.; niece Courtney (Jeff) Bensing Smith and son Declan of Colorado Springs, Colo. and nephew Ryan Bensing of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Per Greg’s wishes, there will be no services. The family respectfully requests, in lieu of flowers, that those wishing to remember Greg please make memorial contributions to Mineral County EMS. Donations can be mailed to 520 USFS Rd. 520, Creede, CO 81130.For the complete article see the 09-05-2013 issue.
