M.V. roadwork continues downtown

Posted: Thursday, Jul 18th, 2013

MONTE VISTA —Colorado Department of Transportation contractor Concrete Works of Colorado, Inc., resumes work today on concrete reconstruction in downtown Monte Vista.

Concrete had been installed in the eastbound driving lanes from Batterson east to Broadway. Starting this week crews will begin installation of concrete from U.S. 285 to just east of Jefferson Street. This is expected to take a week or two, weather pending. After work in the eastbound driving lanes is complete crews will begin removing and replacing the entire eastbound length of the concrete section with new curb and gutter (including electrical work).

The project is progressing well and is currently ahead of schedule.

Traffic impacts – All traffic is currently switched to the westbound lanes of US 160 between Broadway and Jefferson avenues, and both eastbound lanes remain closed 24/7 as crews remove and replace the existing roadway on the eastbound side, as well as all curb and gutter. Access to businesses and sidewalks will be maintained throughout the duration of the project, but may be temporarily altered by milling and paving operations. No parking will be available in the three-block stretch from Batterson to Jefferson on U.S. 160. Traffic control devices will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access signs and flaggers will assist trucks moving in and out of the project.

Motorists can expect slower speeds and minor delays while active work hours for this project are underway, Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

Project overview - The project began on June 10 and is scheduled for completion in late October of 2013. The work will provide concrete and asphalt reconstruction on U.S. 160 through the City of Monte Vista, from essentially Chico Camino Street to the railroad tracks, as well as improve the U.S. 160/U.S. 285 intersection. (More specifically, concrete reconstruction will be done downtown between Batterson Street and just east of Jefferson Street; asphalt resurfacing will be done on either end of downtown—from Chico Camino to Batterson on the west end, and from east of Jefferson to the railroad tracks on the east end.)

The concrete reconstruction will completely remove and replace the existing asphalt travel lanes, including sidewalk, curb and gutter. The roadway, which is currently two lanes in each direction, will be restriped to include a single travel lane in each direction, a center left-turn lane for both directions, bike lanes and parking lanes in each direction. Partnering on the project is the City of Monte Vista, which provided funding that included the local match for $462,000 in federal Transportation Enhancement Program funds to help with the additional street-scaping elements, such as lighting and planters. The street-scaping features will be installed after the construction portion of the project is completed. Concrete Works of Colorado, Inc. of Lafayette, Colo., was awarded a $3.9 million contract for this project (the total project cost, including design work and other preliminary engineering, totals $5.28 million).
