Posted: Wednesday, Jul 3rd, 2013

MOTNE VISTA—Councilors began the June 27 Monte Vista City Council meeting by recognizing Corporal Ivan Garcia for his five years of service to the city.

Police Chief James Grayson also introduced three new officers to the council, Dylan Sutton, Will Pena and Matt Hinkley. Councilor Debbie Garcia told the three new officers, “Ivan is a an awesome role model.”

The board unanimously agreed to approve a resolution to support the Monte Vista Sports Complex. A group of volunteers is working to apply for a Great Outdoors Colorado grant to try to complete the all-weather track and possibly more at the school.

City Manager Don Van Wormer told the council that a full-time receptionist has been hired for the town. She was formerly employed part-time by the police department and that position will now need to be filled.

Van Wormer said work on Highway 160 is progressing nicely and that very few people have called him about the construction.

The city provided space at the Ski Hi Complex for people who had to evacuate from South Fork and the surrounding area.

Van Wormer was grateful for the Calvary Baptist Church helping to feed and care for evacuees.

Monte Vista police officers helped with the evacuation. Grayson said, “Don was really kind of the ambassador for the city.”

Grayson told the council the department needs to do more training. They will have 16 different trainings during the next month. Trainings will include, use of force, defensive driving and more.

Councilor Greg Spangler asked Grayson if fireworks would be permitted for the Fourth of July. Grayson said, “unless we get a little bit of rain, we don’t need to do that.”
