MONTE VISTA—Boy Scout Troop 286 spent the weekend before Earth Day cleaning up around the San Luis Valley Regional Landfill.

Scoutmaster Doug Steward explained that the scouts do similar projects throughout the year, but this ambitious cleanup may take longer than they had anticipated. During the weekend, hard-working scouts, ranging from ten to 15 years old, cleared away pile after pile of debris. Much of the garbage, Steward explained, was old enough to be protected under the National Historic Artifact Act, so before the scouts could start cleaning up an archeologist had to visit.

With their permission in place, the group of seven scouts set up camp and spent the weekend in the dirt helping to keep the local community clean. The troop also does work at Cathedral Campground each year, which includes clean up and repairs.

Steward believes that they will return to the site again saying, “service work is a corner stone of our activity.”

The cleanup was organized as a part of National Good Turn Week, which encourages scouts to provide a service in their community. Many projects focus on helping those in need and addressing poor health conditions.
