Valley youth advance to championship

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa Optimist Club is proud to announce that 23 San Luis Valley youth will be competing at the Colorado/Wyoming Optimist Tri-Star Basketball Skills District Championship on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Each will be judged on their shooting, passing and dribbling skills.

In January, more than 90 boys and girls from across the Valley competed locally against youth of their own age in six age groups, 8 thru 13, for a chance to compete in the southern regional competition, which was held on March 9th in Pueblo.

Of those who competed locally, 36 Valley youth advanced to the regional competition, and 23 qualified to compete in Denver by finishing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their specific age and gender division.

There they will compete against other qualifiers from throughout Colorado and Wyoming.

Winners from the Valley of the southern regional competition are:

8 year old girls

1st Place – Xiomara Maestas (San Pablo)

2nd Place – Kelli Jo Wilson (Alamosa)

9 year old girls

1st Place – Jae Lea Maestas (San Pablo)

2nd Place – Cheyenne Caldon (Alamosa)

3rd Place – Adelia Romero (Monte Vista)

10 year old girls

1st Place – Feliciana Lobato (San Luis)

11 year old girls

1st Place – Kendra Parra (Del Norte)

2nd Place – Randi Espinoza (San Luis)

3rd Place – Emily Wilson (Alamosa)

12 year old girls

3rd Place – Amaya Atencio (Alamosa)

13 year old girls

1st Place – Katelyn Caldon (Alamosa)

2nd Place – Savana Geringer (Alamosa)

8 year old boys

1st Place – Lennie Valdez (San Luis)

2nd Place – Cody Lopez (Alamosa)

3rd Place – Ben Parra (Del Norte)

9 year old boys

1st Place – Mario Sanchez (Monte Vista)

10 year old boys

1st Place – Joshua Duran (Antonito)

2nd Place – Francisco Esquibel (San Luis)

3rd Place – Colin Bervig (Alamosa)

11 year old boys

1st Place – Ian Jackson (Alamosa)

12 Year Old Boys

1st Place – Carlos Parra (Del Norte)

2nd Place – Brandon Bervig (Alamosa)

13 year old boys

1st Place – Noah Romero (Alamosa)

Winners at the District Championship will be announced that evening on the Pepsi Center main floor before the Denver Nuggets game against the Sacramento Kings.

The Alamosa Optimist Club meets every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month at noon at the Inn of the Rio Grande and invites anyone interested to attend.
