The boiler in City Hall will be replaced as a part of the city's energy efficiency project.

MONTE VISTA—The Monte Vista City Council voted unanimously to approve a lease-purchase agreement with the San Luis Valley Federal Bank for construction and energy efficient updates on city buildings.

Two companies approached City Manager Don VanWormer with plans to update City Hall with energy efficient lighting, weatherizing and a new boiler for the building. VanWormer said that the boiler has long been a concern for the city, and that it had been repaired many times, costing the city money.

ESG, Energy Systems Group, will make the “green” improvements to the city building and will guaranteed a set amount of energy savings after the work is finished. If the savings do not meet the guaranteed amount, ESG will reimburse the city any amount over the guarantee.

VanWormer anticipates that the energy savings will cover the lease-purchase payments and will save the city money in the long run.

Payments on the lease-purchase agreement with the San Luis Valley Federal Bank are scheduled to begin on Feb. 14 in 2014. The total amount of the agreement is approximately $320,000 to be repaid over 15 years.

Lighting will be replaced in all of the city buildings with more energy efficient options.

Weatherizing and the boiler replacement will only affect the City Hall and Monte Vista Police Department.

There is a possibility that the city will look at making more changes in other city buildings after this project has been successfully completed.

ESG will serve as the contractor for the project and will handle any sub-contracting needs. VanWormer said that the city, “Strongly prefers,” hiring local companies where possible.
