Jacob George'Jake' Gutierrez,76

Alamosa—Jacob George “’Jake” Gutierrez, 76, died Jan. 14, 2013 at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver with his wife, son and granddaughter by his side.

He was born June 23, 1936, at home in Monte Vista to Edward and Maggie Cortez Gutierrez.

Jake served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and then in the Colorado Army National Guard.

Active in veterans’’ organizations, he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 899 in Alamosa and BPOE Elks Lodge 1297 in Alamosa, a member of Dickey Springer Post 119, The American Legion, the Legion WWII – Korea- Vietnam Last Squad, Marine Corps League, the San Luis Valley POW-MIA Committee, a cause to which he was devoted.

A carpenter by occupation, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed traveling to different destinations and loved watching the Nuggets and Broncos, building things with wood, his Irish Setter, Fritz and his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, step grandfather, brother and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gilbert and sisters, Viola and Dolores; three sons, Michael, George and Joseph and a great-nephew, Sgt. Glen E. Martinez, USMC, who died in action in Iraq.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Lobato Gutierrez of the family home; one son, Gerald Gutierrez of Alamosa; stepsons, Richard “Rich” Gallegos of Pueblo, Anothony (Nikki) Gallegos of Alamosa and Bill (Rachel) Gallegos of Reno, Nev.; mother of his children, Lucille Gutierrez of Alamosa; grandchildren, Tonantzin Gutierrez of Durango and Sandero Gutierrez of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Matthew and Amee Espinoza of Denver, step grandchildren, Sara, Michelle and Anthony “Bubba” Gallegos of Alamosa; great grandchildren, Brea, Lyric and Lucy of Durango; sisters, Pauline (Leroy) Jaramillo and Louise (Nabor) Jaramillo, all of Center, and Lorine Porter of Monte Vista; brothers, Oscar (Clara) Gutierrez and Bob (Betty) Gutierrez, also of Monte Vista; a brother-in-law, Isaac Martinez; several nieces and nephews and countless good friends.

A vigil service and celebration of life was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa; Recitation of the Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at the funeral home; and Mass of the Resurrection was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa.

Visitation was from 1 p.m. to service time Thursday and Friday at Romero Funeral Chapel.

Burial with full military honors was held in the Alamosa Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa.
