MONTE VISTA — Remember that favorite Christmas song from long ago?
This year’s Holiday Festival in downtown Monte Vista is themed “Songs of Christmas” and will begin with an art walk opening reception and live music from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Mansion Bed and Breakfast.
Artists participating in the walk will be featured, along with display location owners.
Then, for “kids” 18 and up, Monte Vista Parks and Recreation will stage a dodge ball tournament at 7 p.m. at Ski Hi Park. Entry is $50 per team for teams of between six and a maximum of 10 players.
Don't forget the "five Ds" of dodgeball, according to Patches O'Houlihan: "Dodge, dip, duck, dive and … dodge".
Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams, as well as for the best costume and the most valuable players. For more info, contact the recreation coordinator at 852-2692.
Saturday will dawn with hungry families headed for Stars Family Dining restaurant for breakfast with Santa from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Reservations are required. Phone 852-0250.
Then, from 10-11 a.m., Santa will be at the Monte Villa for those who slept in. Call 852-5166 for reservations, which are required.
To help locate that special gift, there will be a crafters’ bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nazarene gymnasium.
The annual Monte Vista Arts Council bisque bowl and art walk will begin at 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge.
There will be live music and bisque bowls will be for sale, filled to the top with free homemade soup.
The art walk will also begin at 11 a.m. In addition, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a Santa’s Workshop at the Monte Vista Kids Connection in the basement of Central Auditorium at Bill Metz Elementary. Children in grades K-5 are invited to attend and make Christmas crafts or gifts. The Kiwanis Klowns will also be stopping by.
The Kiwanis will also conduct a luminaria lighting ceremony at 4:45 p.m.at Monte’s Corner, then things will get a bit serious at 5 p.m. with the Memorial Tree prayer and tree lighting at the same location. Those who have lost someone special are encouraged to hang memorial ornaments on the tree.
Then the ever-popular Parade of Lights will begin lining up at 5:45 p.m.in front of Hope’s Castle and will begin at 6 p.m. in downtown Monte Vista.
Parade participants are asked to focus their entries on a favorite Christmas carol.
The first place award of $75 cash and the traveling trophy will go to the float that best fits the theme.
Second place, the best group entry, will receive $50 in cash, as will the best family entry.
Third place and $30 cash will go to the best walking entry.
Rio Grande Savings and Loan, Sunflower Bank, the Monte Vista Co-Op and Wild Thyme Art Gallery are sponsoring the parade.
Fireworks will follow and hot chocolate will be served at Sonshine Acres.
Finally, at 6:30 p.m., the North Pole will be set up with Santa at the Monte Vista Information Center.
A holiday dance will take place from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Alibi’s Sports Bar and Grill.
