FLORENCE—Seven of the top 10 teams in Class 3A in Tim Yount’s On The Mat Rankings competed in the Mel Smith Husky Invite hosted by the Florence Huskies on Saturday.
The No. 1 ranked Centauri Falcons joined the No. 6 ranked Monte Vista Pirates as two of the three Valley’s 3A teams in the tournament.
No. 2 ranked Valley won the tournament with 170 1/2 points just ahead of the Falcons, behind five second placers scored 163 1/2 points. No. 5 Brush, No. 10 Buena Vista and No. 9 Eaton rounded out the top five places with 122 1/2 points, 100 1/2 points and 89 points, respectively.
The Cañon City Tigers finished in sixth place with 88 points. The No. 6 ranked Monte Vista Pirates found themselves way back in 11th place of the 21-team tournament with 65 points.
Class 3A ranked teams include top-ranked Centauri, Valley (second), Brush, (fifth), Monte Vista (sixth), Holy Family (seventh), Eaton (ninth) and Buena Vista (10th). Among others will be the who are back after a two-year absence from the tournament.
A heated 106-pound championship unfortunately went against No. 1 ranked Diondre Garcia. Penalty points went against Garcia and he lost his first match of the season against No. 3 ranked Channing Lewis of Eaton. The final score was 6-1 in overtime. Garcia earned 21 1/2 points toward the team total.
Cody Cowan was the Pirate’s next placer as he went 3-2 on the day at 126 pounds to take fourth place. Austin Vance went 4-1 on the day to finish third for the Pirates.
JJ Duran (113 pounds), Daniel Borunda (132 pounds), Dillon Martinez (145 pounds) and Garrett Pacheco (152 pounds) each went 1-2 on the day for the Pirates. Jose Lopez (138 pounds), Issac Medina (182 pounds) and Matt Barnes (195 pounds) all were winless on the day.
The Falcons had six total placers including Jason Buhr as the only first place winner at 145 pounds. Buhr got a 21-5 technical fall over Erik Guy of Palmer Ridge.
No. 3 ranked Ethan Coombs at 126 pounds, fell to Joseph Prieto of Holy Family in 3:55. Shane Wilson was also pinned in the 138 pound championship match. He lost to Tyler Thalhammer of Palmer Ridge in 2:33.
No. 1 ranked Micah Keys lost a 9-7 decision to Ladd Bunker of Erie in the 160 pound championship match while No.1 ranked Jareb Aziz also lost a close match at 182 pounds. No. 2 ranked Koby Close of Buena Vista got a narrow 2-1 decision over Aziz.
No. 4 ranked Greg Martinez was the final placer for Centauri as he was pinned by Doran Richard in 4:13.
Patrick Esparsen, who went 4-1 on the day, did not place because he had already wrestled five matches on the day and forced into a double-forfeit at 106 pounds. Christopher Martin (132 pounds) and James Richardson (152 pounds) finished with 3-2 records while Jensen Hamilton (170 pounds) went 2-2.
Dylan Ross (113 pounds), Angelo Martinez (120 pounds) and Tylan Pavolovsky (195 pounds) finished with 1-2 records on the night. RJ Ruybal (220 pounds) went 0-2.
Both the Pirates and Falcons will be traveling to Garden City, Kan. for the Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational.
The two-day tournament starts on Friday.
