James 'Jim' Edwards, 85

DEL NORTE—James “Jim” W. Edwards passed away Aug. 28, 2013 at Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte, Colorado.

Jim was born Jan. 13, 1928 in Monte Vista, Colorado to Herbert and Myrtie (Bond) Edwards.  He attended schools in Monte Vista, graduating in 1948.

Jim married Leona Mae DeFreece on Jan. 14, 1950 in Monte Vista, Colorado.   They were blessed with four children:  Kent (Wendy), Grand Junction, Colo.,  Cliff (Theresa), Monte Vista,  Annavee (David Hinkley), Monte Vista and Carol (Joe Pelz) of Eaton, Colo.

Jim worked for Blue Flame Gas Company for many years, and retired from the Monte Vista Coop in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, supporting his children in their sports activities and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his favorite things to do was work in his garden. His specialty flowers were beautiful gladiolus and dahlias. Everyone driving by noticed them and missed them when he was unable to continue working on them.  He was a member of the Monte Vista Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years. He was also actively involved in the Civil Air Patrol during the wartime.

He is survived by his spouse of 63 years Leona, his four children, brother Orville (Judy) Edwards of Eckert, Colo. and sister Doris Kohler of Mountainair, N.M. He also leaves grand children Branden Edwards, Craton Edwards, Dakota (Rick Hoffmann) Payson Edwards, Shannon (Scott) Hensley, Shelby Richardson, Matthew Hinkley, Shannon Hinkley, Jessica (Chad) Ruff, Jared Pelz, Bobby Pelz and Marcy Hall, as well as 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dale Edwards and granddaughter Sgt. Faith R. Hinkley.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Monte Vista.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Monte Vista.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the First Christian Church, P.O. Box 648, Monte Vista CO  81144 or Hospice Del Valle.
