ALAMOSA —Delfino Martinez, 80, of Alamosa, died Dec. 13, 2012. He had bypass surgery Nov. 30, 2012, at Parkview Medical Center and had returned home Dec. 7. He was born Feb, 6, 1932, in Las Vegas, N.M., the youngest of three children born to Esequiel O. and Frances Ortiz Martinez. He grew up in Rocky Ford, Colo.

A retired Registered Nurse, Delfino also retired from the U.S. Army and Colorado Army National Guard at the rank of Sergeant First Class with 34 years of service. He was a previous owner of the Montgomery Ward franchise store in Las Animas, Colo.

Delfino was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, the Alamosa Senior Citizens and their pool team, and previously was a San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center Ambassador Volunteer.

He loved to travel, camp in his motor home, play pool, watch wrestling and ride his ATV. He had a particular soft spot in his heart for, and recently donated his vehicle to, the SLV Animal Welfare Society.

His parents; his sisters, Margaret and Sara; his first wife, Lucille Santisteven and his infant son, Charles, preceded him in death.

   Survivors include his wife, Kathy Marie, of Alamosa; sons, Robert Martinez of Alamosa and Alvin Martinez of Denver; daughter, Theresa Martinez of Las Animas; sons, Tom (Brenda) Martinez of Las Animas and Lee (Jennifer) Flodder of Van, Texas. Grandchildren include Patrick (Melanie ) Martinez, Robert Martinez, Jr., Melissa (C.J.) Lucero, Vanessa Martinez, Carlos Martinez, Laura Martinez, Jacob Martinez, Leah Martinez, Lee Flodder, Jr., Andrew Flodder, Jordan Flodder and Jacob Flodder. Great-grandchildren include Wilson Martinez, Gracie Martinez, Angelica Martinez, Leticia Martinez, Aaliyah Martinez, Gabriel Martinez, and Talesa Martinez. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

   The Recitation of the Rosary was held at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 18, and Mass of Resurrection at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Las Animas, Colo. Burial was in Ft. Lyon National Cemetery.

In memory of Delfino, donations may be made to the Las Animas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post through Horber Funeral Chapel in Las Animas, Colo.
