DEL NORTE – George Oliver Hawman, 84, a lifelong resident of Monte Vista, died peacefully Nov. 16, 2012 at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte.
George was born in and lived his entire life in the log home in Monte Vista built by his father. Although his home was “modernized” with the addition of indoor plumbing in the 1950’s it was never “ruined,” as he put it, by the installation of television or other electronic or digital contraptions.
George was the original owner/operator of Georges Repair on the Gunbarrel and provided the agricultural and area community with quality mechanical services for many years. His customers were his friends.
He served his country in the Army at the end of WWII and spent some time in Europe before returning to the Valley to serve his community as a Boy Scout Leader, EMT volunteer and Monte Vista City Councilman.
As a lifelong Valley resident and avid four-wheeler, George knew every back road, side road, peak and valley in the area.
His parents, and brothers Grant and Edwin and, recently, his sister Jessie Olson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his brother, Frank, of California and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside farewell and interment of his ashes took place Friday, Nov. 23, at the Monte Vista Cemetery. Interment of the ashes of his beloved sister, Jessie Olson, also took place. It is fitting that they shall be paid final tribute together.
Arrangements are in the care of Rogers Family Mortuary of Monte Vista. To express online condolences please visit www.rogersfunerals.com
