DEL NORTE — Lare “Bill” Lambert, 83, died Sept. 24, 2012, at Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte, Colo.

He was born Dec. 21,1928, in Minot, N.D. to Dan and Ruth Lambert.

Bill grew up in Minot and was in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Explorer Air Scouts. The family moved to Hawthorne, Calif. when Bill was in ninth grade.

After graduating from Leuzinger High School in 1946, he joined the Army and was stationed in Korea as a border guard to North Korea. After 1 1/2 years in the Army, he went to aircraft mechanic school, worked as an aircraft mechanic for two years, in Minot and then 11 years in Northrop Aircraft in Hawthorne, Calif.

He married Jane Posten in 1952 and lived in Torrance, Calif. They divorced in 1995.

Bill moved to Monte Vista, Colo., in 1961 and worked briefly for Lockwood Grader, Dawn Roberts Construction, Whitlock Motors and Schall Iron Works.

Then he discovered his favorite career in the clothing business. Bill worked for 13 years in Fassett’s Department Store in Monte Vista, then 13 years in Kavley`s Department Store in Del Norte, retiring from there.

Bill was in the Junior Chamber of Commerce for four years, being vice president and president for one year, and a member for years in Rotary.

He enjoyed the great outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. The pride of his life was the chalet he built in 1983 in the mountains above Del Norte. He had names for each fish that he fed daily in his creek.

In 2009, when living solo as a mountain man was no longer feasible, he moved into the Legacy, an assisted living facility in Monte Vista, where he gained an extended family.

Survivors include his son, Larry (Theresa) Lambert from Seaback, Wash.; his daughter, Janice (Andy) Beechick from Arvada, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Stephen, John, and Karissa Lambert.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life was held Friday Sept. 28, at Strohmayer`s Funeral Home 205 S. Broadway, Monte Vista.

Arrangements were by Strohmayers.
