MONTE VISTA — Paul Vernon Phillips, 61, died July 7, 2012 at his home in Monte Vista. He was born March 2, 1951 in Alamosa and spent most of his life in the San Luis Valley surrounded by many family members and friends.
He served his country for four years at Miramar Naval Air Base in San Diego Calif. and met and married Diane (Buck), while stationed there. After returning to the Valley and starting his family, Paul purchased a local boot and shoe repair business which he owned and operated for over 30 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Paul loved spending his time hunting and fishing, with his greatest fondness being hunting ducks and coyotes.
He also enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and regularly held get-togethers to bring everybody close.
His parents, George and Betty Phillips, and one of his greatest companions, “Bud,” his Springer Spaniel, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Phillips; children, Mike (Lisa) Phillips of Winfield, Kan. and Scott Phillips of Monte Vista; his brother and sister, Gary (Karen) Phillips of Suffolk, Va and Connie Hill of Del Norte. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Jessica and Zachary Phillips of Winfield.
Paul chose cremation, and his memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday July 14, at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista. Inurnment will follow at the Monte Vista Cemetery.
Any contributions on Paul’s behalf may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Del Valle in care of the funeral home.
