Spill closes highway

Courtesy photos Gas and water spilled across Highway 160 last week after a vehicle struck a gas pump. The driver of the vehicle has been cited for driving under the influence of alcohol.

MONTE VISTA—The Monte Vista Police Department was notified of a traffic crash at Love’s Convenience Store, located at 1537 Grand Avenue on July 29 at approximately 5:04 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found that a Ford pickup truck towing a trailer containing another vehicle struck the gas pumps in the parking lot of the store and a fire hydrant at the edge of the parking lot next to the street. Officers contacted the driver of the vehicle, Benijno Gonzales, 63, of Rio Grande County. Gonzales was transported to the San Luis Valley Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Gonzales was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, careless driving and failure to present proof of compulsory insurance.

Highway 160 westbound was closed for approximately 90 minutes while the scene was investigated and cleared.
