DEL NORTE – Commissioner Karla Shriver said she wanted Valley-wide residents to be aware of the importance of having flood insurance after the recent fires have stripped ground cover from the forest floor making flooding much more likely; even if people are not considered to be in the flood plain.
“It is important for people to have flood insurance and to be aware of the timelines involved, since it has to be in effect before the flood event happens,” said Shriver. “With all of this warm weather, things could start happening sooner than expected.”
It is likely the actual flood plain could now be 40 feet higher and outside of the area’s previously established norm.
