MONTE VISTA—The Monte Vista School Board agreed to set aside an amount up to $90,000 to help pay for an all-weather track during their May 7 meeting.
A group of concerned citizens have organized a committee to work toward finishing the sports complex and track. Those projects were not completed during the BEST project in the district.
Others have been working to establish a one-to-one technology program for students, which might utilize tablets, laptops and other tech devises.
Both of those groups spoke to the board during their April meeting. Other concerns expressed at the meeting included security and parking at the middle school. The board agreed that they would try to have an approximate amount to dedicate to the projects determined by the May meeting.
The track is estimated to cost at least $300,000 and the district estimates they will have approximately $225,000 left from bond funds, after paying for other district needs.
Remaining funds can be utilized for the technology program and other projects in the district.
The track committee will now have to pursue grant opportunities and fundraising to reach the total amount needed to build the track. Once that project is completed they plan to work on building the field house.
Great Outdoors Colorado grants may cover most of the remaining amount for the track project. The committee is interested in using a grant writer to pursue that funding within the next grant cycle. They will also request in-kind donations from community members to help in the grant application and to cover some of the expense of the project.
The other group will continue to pursue one-to-one technology for students. Teachers need to be trained to use the devices and to help students use them before the program begins. Superintendent Robert Webb said he would like to see one-to-one devices across the district in five years.
