MONTE VISTA—Monte Vista celebrated Arbor Day on Friday, April 26 with a tree planting ceremony at the Montez Skate Park.

Mayor Jose “Art” Medina welcomed everyone to the event, including children from the Monte Vista Kids Connection program, to celebrate improvements to the park and Arbor Day.

Crews dug holes for the new trees and lowered them into place before Medina was joined by the children in replacing the dirt. Colorado State Forest Service Forester Adam Moore said that the lancewood cottonwood trees were planted well and encouraged the children to plant trees at their own homes.

Medina said billions of trees have been planted in recognition of Arbor Day. Trees have been planted in Australia, Japan, Korea, Israel, Yugoslavia, India, Iceland and more. He reminded the gathered children, ”Sometimes a good idea can make a real difference.”

The mayor proclaimed Friday, April 26 as Monte Vista Arbor Day and that the fourth Friday of every April will be Arbor Day in the town.
