Purse thief steals valuable memories

Posted: Friday, May 3rd, 2013

MONTE VISTA—While taking dishes into a benefit meal at the Latter Day Saints church in Monte Vista a thief broke into Natalie Brimhall’s car stealing her purse, camera bag and irreplaceable memories for her friends.

Brimhall said that she didn’t think to lock her door or take in her possessions, because she believed everyone was there for a good cause. She urges others to “always be aware of their surroundings and be careful.”

Monte Vista Police Chief James Grayson said officers reported to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. to find Brimhall’s window broken out. He says that a person of interest has been described. Witnesses at the church said that a man in a tan colored vehicle, possibly a Ford, with a beard pulled in after Brimhall.

Grayson cautions people to lock their cars, take keys and other valuables with them when they are not in the vehicle.

Brimhall is now worried that the thief has her personal identification from her wallet and access to everything on her cell phone. Her concealed carry permit was also in her stolen purse. She hopes that the thief understands that she is being extra cautious. She said, “I’m a photographer, so I have a good aim.”

The most valuable item stolen, according to Brimhall, was not her expensive camera equipment, but the images saved on them from a recent shoot with a marine and his fiancée. She hopes to recover those pictures, even if she can’t get all of her other possessions back.

Grayson asks that anyone with information on the theft contact the Monte Vista Police Department at 852-6161 or the San Luis Valley Crime Stoppers hotline at 589-4111. Those tips are anonymous and there may be a cash reward for information. Grayson said that even the smallest tips can be helpful.
