Better photos raise hopes that bank robber can be recognized

MONTE VISTA — Police are working to identify an armed bank robber who took an undetermined amount of cash from a local bank and then fled on foot.

Interim Chief of Police Jim Grayson said the robber took about 51 seconds to enter the bank, point a weapon at a teller, demand and receive cash and flee on foot.

Grayson reported that, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Thursday, Nov.29, officers from the Monte Vista Police Department were called to the Community Bank, 59 North Broadway Street, regarding an apparent aggravated robbery.

Upon arrival, the investigation revealed that a black male had entered the bank, pointed a handgun at one of the tellers and demanded money.

Grayson said the bank personnel did everything they were supposed to do and no one was hurt.

According to reports, the suspect was dressed in an orange helmet with a “CDOT” logo, tan jacket, blue jeans and black shoes, along with a makeshift face mask created from a white towel or handkerchief.

Grayson said the helmet added a few inches to his height, but the robber was apparently between five feet eight and five feet 11 inches tall and, according to the teller, did not have a remarkable accent.

The bank staff did not know which way he ran when he left the bank, so officers spent the rest of the day Thursday searching railroad cars and other items nearby.

A structure fire, reported at the same time, burned a vacant building, but Grayson said he didn’t believe it was started as a way to divert attention from the bank.

He said someone had apparently been staying there, since there were items in the house to suggest that was the case.

Anyone with information about this or any other crime is asked to contact the Monte Vista Police Department at 719-852-5111.
