Infant, sitter badly hurt in Monday crash
Posted: Wednesday, Sep 23rd, 2009

DEL NORTE — An 11-month-old child and her sitter were seriously injured in a crash near Del Norte at 11:58 a.m. Monday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Investigation began when the Colorado State Patrol Communication Center received a 911 call reporting a one vehicle roll-over on Rio Grande County Road 13, three miles south of Del Norte.

When troopers arrived at the crash scene, they found that Jessica Martinez, 27, Del Norte and an unidentified child had been ejected and seriously hurt when the vehicle rolled.

Investigation revealed that a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Daniel Medina, 25, of Monte Vista was northbound on County Road 13 when it traveled off the right side of the road and went out of control.

Medina drove the vehicle back onto the road where it went into a yaw and traveled back off the right side of the road, where it collided with a fence and rolled 1 ¼ times before coming to rest on its left side facing south. The driver remained in the vehicle.

Martinez was a front seat passenger in the vehicle, holding the child. Both were ejected and came to rest in a ditch next to the vehicle. No seatbelts or child restraint systems were in use.

Martinez and the child were taken to Rio Grande Hospital in serious condition. The woman was flown to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver and the child was being treated at Rio Grande Hospital. Medina was treated and released.

The crash remains under investigation.
