Light-hearted city council proclaims Arbor Day

MONTE VISTA, Honoring the special day of planting trees first proclaimed in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, where one million trees were planted in Nebraska, the council proclaimed Arbor Day to be April 24, 2015.

Vali Theatre reaches phase one goal

MONTE VISTA--Community members Ray and Colette Skeff, Monte Vista Mayor Debbie Garcia and Monte Vista Community Fund President Bob Bryning have been instrumental in the successful reopening of the Vali Theatre. Monte Vista man arrested for arson

MONTE VISTA--According to Monte Vista Police Chief James Grayson, last Wednesday, Jan. 21, just after midnight, officers from the Monte Vista Police Department and firefighters from the Monte Vista Fire Department were dispatched to 504 Lyell Street, a vacant structure, regarding a structure fire.
Upon arrival, officers and firefighters found the building to be fully engulfed in flames.

Nuggets Skills Challenge shoots into Ski Hi Park

MONTE VISTA--The Monte Vista Recreation Department hosted the Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Ski-Hi. This annual fun and light competition was free to all boy and girl participants between the ages of 7-14. There were separate boys and girls divisions, and awards were given to first, second and third place in each age group.

Local wins lifetime achievement award

ESPANOLA, N.M.-- Saturday night was a big one for Monte Vista resident Jerry Medina, as he was awarded the "Hispano Lifetime Achievement" Award at the 24th Annual Hispano Music Awards. Held at the Ohkay Casino Conference Center in Espanola, N.M., the awards are presented by the New Mexico Hispano Music Association (NMHMA).
